I can't believe that it is already our last week of music class! As is tradition at the end of the school year, we will be watching a video version of "Peter and the Wolf" together this week. "Peter and the Wolf" is a piece of music written by the Russian composer, Prokofiev, which will feature many of the instruments that we have been learning about. The movie is about 40 minutes, so save it for when you have some time to sit and watch. There are many versions of Peter and the Wolf, but this one is my favorite. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do! Today we are going to learn some new musical words and then finish up with our last Woodwind instrument! Our last instrument in the Woodwind Family that we are going to listen to is the bassoon. The bassoon uses a double reed, like the oboe. The bassoon is the largest and lowest instrument in the Woodwind Family. Here is a very short video of what a bassoon sounds like. I also found some great videos of bassoon ensembles. Some of the videos include a contrabassoon, which is an even larger and lower bassoon! Pick a few videos that look interesting to you and listen to how the bassoon sounds! Let's read some rhythms! Get ready to do a little moving! Here is a video with a little more information about the Woodwind Family. The next Woodwind instrument we will focus on is the clarinet. Choose a few of these clarinet videos to watch a little bit of! First, we have a little more Star Wars! I forgot to post these Angry Birds Star Wars rhythms last week! Enjoy! Now for some Elephant Ostinatos! Let's talk about the Woodwind Family!!! Our first woodwind instrument we will study is the flute. Listen to at least a little bit of each of these flute performances! Super cool combination of flute playing and beatboxing! This guy has lots of cool videos on YouTube! Listen for the flutter tonguing in this one. Flutter tonguing is a technique where flautists (flute players) flutter, or roll, their tongues very fast while playing. It makes a sound almost like a bird cooing. It is used a lot in classical and jazz music, and you can here it in this performance. This flautist is only 15 years old and her technique is amazing! She was on a show called Prodigies. A child prodigy is a young person who performs at the level of an adult. Listen to both songs! The first is a piece by Bach that we have listened to in music class before. The second is Flight of the Bumblebee - a truly difficult piece! We also listened to a brass ensemble play an arrangement of this piece 2 weeks ago! Here are your assignment directions! Now go back to our Google Classroom to get the Flipgrid link to complete your assignment! We are going to do a Star Wars parachute routine! Grab a nice big sheet, gather your family, and get ready! Now go back to our Google Classroom to complete your Star Wars Rhythms assignment! (There is a video with instructions in the Classroom.) Use the videos from last week to review our Moving Up song!! Then go on to this week's videos. On to the second part of our lesson! Watch this video three times! Try it with both ostinatos and the song! Were you able to do all three?? Now go back to our Google Classroom and complete the Create Your Own Ostinato assignment! First, we are going to practice Best Day of My Life. Make sure you are watching the correct video for your class! A GROUP - Bolembach, Burke, Sager, Verbeck B GROUP - Gilmore, Korchma, Steinbrecher Next, we are going to practice Heart of America with the track. Make sure you are watching the correct video for your class! A GROUP - Bolembach, Burke, Sager, Verbeck B GROUP - Gilmore, Korchma, Steinbrecher Let's do a few rhythms and learn a new song! Ostinato #1 - "One elephant" Ostinato #2 - "Elephants all like to play" Last thing for today - Here are a couple of really cool videos of brass ensembles! See if you can identify all of the instruments! Have you ever played Super Mario World??? If not, ask your parents if they have. Anyone who has played Super Mario World will find this extremely funny! And even if you haven't played the game, you'll probably still love this brass arrangement and video production! Now go back to our Google Classroom and take the "Brass Quiz" to test your knowledge on how much you have learned about the brass instruments!! moving up song - best day of my lifeBest Day of My Life - Review for A GROUP - Bolembach, Burke, Sager, Verbeck

B GROUP - NEW - Next Section!! - Gilmore, Korchma, Steinbrecher I hear it calling, outside my window. ....... Soul. The stars were burning so bright, the sun was out 'til midnight. ...... Control. We are going to study the other two instruments in the brass family this week - the trumpet and the french horn. In this video, I read a book about a very famous trumpet player named Louis Armstrong. Watch a little bit of each of the videos below. To start, here is a video of Louis Armstrong singing and playing the trumpet Here is another trumpet player - Wynton Marsalis. This is a fun video because his daughter is the one singing! The thing that you see inside the bell of his trumpet is called a mute. A mute changes the sound of the trumpet. Now for a couple of horn videos. This first one is a fun Disney medley composed for French Horn quintet. A quintet means 5 players. Do you notice anything strange about the 5 french horn players in this video??? Have you ever seen Back to the Future? This is a very cool arrangement of music from that movie for an ensemble of horns and percussion. When all of the horns play together, it sounds very cool! Here is a cool duet for horn and trumpet! Can you figure out which instrument is Elsa and which is Anna? Let's practice our moving up song! This first video is for the A GROUP - Bolembach, Burke, Sager, Verbeck
This video is for the B GROUP - Gilmore, Korchma, Steinbrecher
Don't forget to practice your Field Day Music!
Here is our virtual lesson for the week! Do you remember what family of instruments we have been studying?? No, not the string family. The next one! Watch the video below! Click through the slideshow below and read about the Trombone and the Tuba. There is also an audio clip linked to each slide.
Now let's watch some videos! First, a video of Melba Liston playing her trombone. You will also see some other brass instruments in this video. We will talk about these next week! This next video is Trombone Shorty. You may have already seen this one in class. If you already saw that one, this one is Trombone Shorty playing with some VERY famous musicians when he was only 13 years old! Now let's learn about the tuba! Watch a little of this one! Did you know that a big group of tubas could sound so peaceful?? Do you like Star Wars?? Here is a little Star Wars on tuba! **BONUS: Go to my Google Classroom and answer the question that I posted for Second Grade under the Classwork tab! Time for Boom Cards! Once I create a new password, you will not be able to use your currently assigned card anymore, so make sure that you do not have it before e-mailing for a new password! Use your account to complete at least 1 Sol-Mi-La game this week! Remember to take your time!! Correct answers are better than fast answers!!! Field Day Music is located on a separate tab under Second Grade. Don't forget to practice your Field Day music this week when you have some time!
